On Tuesday, after President Bush’s nomination of Condi Rice as Secretary of State, the Washington Post published a horrible, racist cartoon by Oliphant that depicted Rice as a big-lipped, buck-toothed, squawking bird, chirping at the behest of an idiotic President. Apparently, Oliphant, who is known as a liberal, has done this before.
The cartoon makes me upset on several different levels. First, it harkens back to the Sambo days, when blacks were routinely caricatured as ignorant, dumb and otherwise unfit to live. I thought we were over that….but I guess not. Second, what pisses me off is that this cartoon was drawn by a so-called liberal artist and published by a so-called liberal newspaper. So to me what it shows is–once again–that black America has no permanent friends, only permanent interests. Don’t count on white liberals to be on your side; they’re aren’t. Their racism is just hidden deeper.
