Marriage In Black And White

While waiting to be seated at a restaurant over the holidays, I overheard a conversation between a group of WASPy women at the bar. The subject was how one of the girlfriends was “ruining her chances of getting married.” Her friends were telling her to just deal with this guy’s career move and marry him. Apparently he wanted to be a farmer.

This made me think of how many times I heard black women have this conversation: none. I think that black women view marriage differently than white women. Marriage seems to be a goal for white women. One of the friends I had dinner with commented that many white girls who attended her college did so to meet a man to marry. Why do black women have a different view on marriage? Would it be better if black women changed their view to be more like their white counterparts?
