Hutchinson: Where are Today’s King’s

Nearly a quarter century after President Ronald Reagan reluctantly signed legislation making Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s birthday a national holiday, many say that there is no longer any need for activist leaders. The civil rights movement succeeded so well, that thinking goes, that more blacks than ever have come closer to realizing the American Dream. They own more homes and businesses. They have shattered the glass ceiling in corporations and the professions. They hold more elected offices and spots in government. They are healthier and better educated than ever. Black leaders and organizations have reacted to this unprecedented prosperity and success and now focus on grabbing even more wealth and political power.
