Many of us remember Ed Gordon from his days on BET. He now hosts a show on NPR called “News & Notes” that airs daily on your local NPR station. His show has now been airing since December 2004. His hour long show gets to the heart of many issues facing African-Americans today. Farai Chideya is also a host/commentator.
My favorite part of the show is the roundtable discussion held during the middle of the show. His guest commentators recently includes Mary Francis Berry; George Curry, editor-in-chief of the National Newspaper Publishers Association News Service; Randall Robinson, author of The Debt — What America Owes to Blacks; Dawn Turner Trice, reporter-columnist with The Chicago Tribune; and Roland Martin, editor of The Chicago Defender to name a few. His show has a mix of viewpoints from the left and the right.
We are at an age now where African-Americans should be able to hear positive news about their culture and people. In fact, we should make it a point to do so. The local news too often only shows images of African-Americans in violent situations or images that only enforce negative stereotypes. There should be more shows like News & Notes. Until there are, you should tune in to The State Of . . ., and the blogs listed on the right for positive news and notes about African-Americans.
