Mfume To Run For Senate

Kweisi Mfume announced today that he will run for the Senate in 2006. He plans to run for the seat vacated by long term Senator Paul Sarbanes after he retires next year. The state of Maryland has gone Democratic as of late and went for John Kerry in the last election cycle. Its other senator is outspoken Democrat Barbara Mikulski and four out of six of its House Reps are Democrats.

Despite leaving the NAACP in what some may consider poor standing. Mfume believe he still has it. Maybe he also believes he can ride the coat-tails of Obama and perhaps Ford. The difference between Mfume and the latter two is that they are both progressive liberals and can be seen as easily working across the aisle. Mfume on the other hand was the head of the organization that was very partisan and very vocal in criticizing Bush and the Republican party. Having Mfume elected would be more of the same with respect to Black political leadership. We can’t just keep recycling old names.
