In Illinois‘ largest infant adoption agency, The Cradle, the fees for adopting a black child is $9,200. The fee for adopting a white child is $25,000. In other agencies, the prices are $7,250 for a black baby and $19,750 for a white baby. Why? Officials cite the fact that there are few families that want to adopt black families. It is difficult to know which agencies have such policies but it is estimated that about 25% have explicit policies stating different fees based on race. And for those that don’t have an explicit policy, it is a common practice to discount black babies. Fortunately, there are agencies who have abandoned this policy and instead base the fees on the income of the adoptive families. However, this practice is in the minority.
TheStateof . . . thinks this is crazy! Even if there is a price differential, must there be such a HUGE price differential!
