Obama Goes Nuclear?

“Obama, who is African-American, acknowledged that he is particularly uncomfortable about the party being in the position of defending the filibuster, the Senate rule that requires a “super” majority - 60 of the 100 senators - to cut off debate. Historically it is most associated with Southern efforts to stall passage of civil rights legislation in the 1950s and 1960s.
I’m not a huge fan of the filibuster,” Obama said. “Historically, what was it used for? Keeping me out of polling places.”

TheStateOf…the Senate. Senator Obama must not have received the memo that states that first-term Senators should keep quiet on matters of Party policy. While we are glad to see him exercising his own free will, and using his enormous political capital, we think he’d better stick with the Party line on this one. In either case, however, we’re on his side.
