This weekend was the anniversary of the American atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Conservative hawks and the uninformed celebrate the bombings as the charitable “ending of the war” that, in the end, “saved lives.” Pure rubbish. For those of us under 60, we can take heart that propaganda didn’t begin with the Iraq war. [...]

Flying in the face of the Pentagon’s claim that it will reduce troop levels in 2006, the Pentagon announced that it will in fact increase troop levels in the short-term.

John Johnson, who founded his publishing empire on a $500 loan using his mother’s furniture as collateral, died on Monday. His cause of death was not releassed.
