Lost in Translation

For some time now, the media has been following the story of Cindy Sheehan, the mother of a soldier killed in Iraq who has camped outside President Bush’s Texas ranch in hopes of gaining a meeting with him. During this time, we have learned many irrelevant things about Sheehan and her family, including the fact that her son reenlisted in the military to fight in Iraq, and the fact that her husband has filed for divorce over this issue. Lost in all the madness is the real issue: the war in Iraq. This war is bigger than one person, even one soldier.

The war in Iraq has divided and frustrated America like no other issue since Vietnam. As Right Wing and Left Wing talk show hosts and commentators shout past each other about one woman who flip-flopped on the war after her son got killed, thinking people meditate on the real issue: the war in Iraq was based on untruths, the policy of “regime change” in Iraq has failed miserably, there is no end in sight and the emporer has no clothes.

I don’t care whether President Bush meets with Sheehan or not. In fact, if I were him, I wouldn’t. Still, I wish people would focus on the real issue, which is that the U.S. is in a whole heap of trouble in Iraq, and things are not looking good for the future.
