Continuing yesterday’s topic on breasts, on Wednesday, the FDA approved the renewed sale of controversial silicone-gel implants by maker Inamed Corp. The FDA said the it could resume sales if the implants met certain unspecified conditions. Now why are the conditions unspecified?
Other companies have also been approved to sell the implants. However, neither the FDA nor the companies will state what conditions have to be met for safety. Given the history of troubles with these implants, it would seem their safety standards would be made known so that women can judge for themselves. Keeping it secret serves no public good. Similar to the FDA’s approval of drugs like Vioxx, it seems if a company has enough money and political clout you can get anything approved. Women beware.
