Weekend Pop Culture: Spike Speaks. After Shooting, Cam’Ron Compares Himself to Malcolm X, Dr. King. P. Diddy in a Little Trouble

“Spike Lee says the value of education is being overshadowed by the images that gangsta rap glorifies.”

“Young black kids didn’t grow up wanting to be a pimp or a stripper like they do now,” Lee said of his youth in Brooklyn.” He likened the images from some rap videos to the distorted view minstrel shows of the 19th century gave most of the world about American blacks.

TheStateOf: I love Spike, but he may be getting a little nostalgic. After all, he’s in his 40s. Morehouse Represent.

Cam’ron states: “It’s like Malcolm X and Martin Luther King. I hate to use them as examples, but they both got murdered and they both were great leaders. Right now [rappers are] in a position where people like [Minister Louis] Farrakhan and Dr. Ben [Chavis] call us up to speak to the youth.”

TheStateOf: Is humility against the law for rappers? You just got shot and you’re already talkin’ smack?! And what are you saying when you “speak to the youth, Cam’ron? Give me a break. Just because you hold a mic doesn’t make you a leader. And who the hell cares about Ben Chavis?

P. Diddy may be in trouble for the Vote or Die Campaign: “Sean “Diddy” Combs is being scrutinized by The National Legal and Policy Center (NLPC), as the group filed a formal complaint with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) against Combs today (Nov. 3).”

TheStateOf: I’ll give it to Diddy–at least he tried.
