First With the Obvious

Ted Koppel said good night for the last time as the anchor of his legendary news program “Nightline” last night. The son of German Jews who escaped to England before the Holocaust was raised in England until he was 13. His parents brought him to America because they knew England did not view him as having “the right” background to be successful. His inspiration to become a broadcast journalist started early. His father would listen to BBC rebroadcasts of Edward R. Murrow and Koppel thought that Murrow’s job would be a grand thing to do.

There are rumors that Koppel will move to HBO. I hope so. Koppel is a breath of fresh air from the many news readers who are in a rush to state the obvious. Koppel is a model of how to look deeper and to probe for the truth.

Koppel signed off last night by saying:

You’ve always been very nice to me, so give this new anchor team for Nightline a fair break. If you don’t, I promise you the network will just put another comedy show in this time slot. Then you’ll be sorry.

The State of . . . Main Stream Media is a little bit weaker with the absence of Koppel. Until he returns . . . Technorati Profile
