What’s the big deal?
Fair warning to any public official who renames a Christmas tree a “holiday tree”: You may get a call from one of hundreds of lawyers lined up by Christian legal groups to defend Christmas against those they say are bent on purging it from the holiday season.
The Liberty Council, which is affiliated with Rev. Jerry Falwell, has signed up 1,600 volunteer lawyers to defend Christmas from pagan attacks. Is Christmas under attack? More people are saying “Happy Holidays” as a way to encompass the many holidays celebrated at this time, including Christmas. There’s Hanukkah and Kwanzaa to name a few. Why don’t these radical conservatives want to celebrate other religions and celebrations? Everybody knows Christmas is not under attack. What? Will we stop celebrating it next year? Heck no.
The State Of . . . Christmas is not in danger. People shouldn’t be complaining that our public officials are being more inclusive. We should be more concerned about when our religious leaders decide not to say Merry Christmas (or Happy Hanukkah) anymore. Public officials do not set religious standards. And I’m also thinking that these officials, and us for that matter, have more important things to worry about. The War, poverty, AIDS, and health care to name just a few.
