The State Of . . . BET

Debra L. Lee (pictured) was named BET’s President and Chief Executive back in June and has apparently made efforts to improve the programming of the network. Last week at the annual winter gathering of the Television Critics Association, she announced major changes in the channel’s programming.

Among the changes are a new show entitled “Meet the Faith” that will be a weekly discussion program on political and social issues from a spiritual and moral perspective and Reginald Hudlin was named President of Entertainment. There are also two reality-based programs. “Lil’ Kim: Countdown to Lockdown” and “Season of the Tiger.” The former is self-explanatory and still shows that BET will never be the black PBS. The latter series is about the daily lives of the band and football members at Grambling State University.

The State Of . . . BET has changed hands but will it change its stripes. I read somewhere that BET actually made more money last year than at any other time in its history. That’s good for business but is it good for Black people?
