But on Friday, more than 100 pastors and theologians from around the country filled Atlanta’s First Iconium Baptist Church for a summit on homophobia in black churches. “We may not all agree on gay marriage, but at the very least we can say that every child of God deserves to be affirmed in the family of God,” the Rev. Kenneth Samuel, senior pastor of Victory Church in Stone Mountain, Ga., said in an interview.”
TheStateOf. . .”Don’t Ask/Don’t Tell” in the Black Community. I had lunch with a great Korean friend of mine the other day, and he said, “Man, Justin, if there is one thing I know about black people, it’s that they don’t like gays.” (He majored in African-American studies, by the way.) Personally, I’ve been shocked to discover the level of homophobia in the black community. In 2004, I attended a meeting between Senator Kerry and the top black clergy in the area. #1 on the clergy’s agenda? You guessed it–gay marriage! I was flabbergasted and embarassed. What would Jesus say about gays??
