One of my most favorite pieces of African Americans in history is the Tuskegee Airmen. They helped fuel my early childhood dream of becoming a pilot (that, along with the high salaries at the time). The squadron was started during World War II when Congress forced the armed forces to integrate. The squadron was so good that the feared German air core, the Luftwaffe, avoided them as much as possible. They were called the “Schwarze Vogelmenschen” Or “Black Birdmen” by the Luftwaffe and the “Redtails” or “Redtail Angels” by the Allies. But one thing everybody called them was excellent. The Tuskegee Airmen were the only fighter squadron to never lose a bomber to enemy fighters.
