Illegal Immigration, Aztlan and the Future of Black America
TheStateOf. . .Illegal Immgration. America appears to be coming to terms with the issue of illegal immigration. I am conflicted on this issue because I find illegal immigration to be TERRIBLE for the black working class, but I also have great affinity towards Latino people, and I hate to think that my view may be colored at all by race. My political view is that America needs to secure it’s southern border–in a hurry. I do not support rounding people up or making it illegal to aid an illegal immigrant. I do support a guest worker program that makes illegal immigrants earn citizenship over 15-20 years. Simply put, out here in Los Angeles, illegal immigration is completely out of control, as it is in Arizona. Illegal immigrants are roaming the City, living in hastily built shacks in South Central L.A. and clogging L.A. public schools with unprepared students. For taxpaying African Americans in the Los Angeles area, public schools are sadly not an option because over 70% of the students in L.A.’s school system are Spanish-speakers. More importantly, perhaps, many blacks feel that illegals are taking low-skilled jobs and medical resources and jobs away from black people. A local public hospital that has been a mainstay in the black community for 30 years is about to go bankrupt because illegal immigrant care is not reimbursed by the government. On the other hand, I have hired illegal immigrants to do work around my house, so I’m part of the problem. And, in reality, many Latinos I know tell me flatly that they intend to reclaim “Aztlan”–California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas–largely through illegal immigration. (I can’t blame them. I’d take it back from whitey, too.) Check out commentary on CNN’s Lou Dobbs.
