However, has anyone asked if she can really do it? Katie hasn’t been known for going to war zones or rushing to the latest natural disaster. That was always Matt Lauer or Bryant Gumbel’s job. Katie always did the puff pieces. I saw her from the gym floor today interviewing a former teen porn star. Gripping news. I just don’t see her as having the gravitas of Brian Williams, Bob Schieffer (the man she may succeed), or even Anderson Cooper. I think there are also women anchors out there who may not have been on the scene as long as Katie, but definitely have the chops to do serious work–Robin Roberts comes to mind and even Diane Sawyer. The latter has been around just as long as Katie and has more experience in the evening settings.
It looks like the deal will go through and we will see if The State Of . . . CBS News will get out of the cellar with this move. I think they will have to do an image makeover for Katie to make her more serious if they are going to pull this off. Maybe they can call her Katherine, instead?
