MTV’s Greatest Emcees of All Time

Here’s the list so far:
10: LL Cool J
9: Eminem
8: Ice Cube
7: Big Daddy Kane
6: Krs-One
5: Nas
4: Rakim
3: Notorious B.I.G.

Once thing is for certain, Tupac is either 1 or 2. I would place my bets on Tupac being 2 and Jay-Z being 1. I don’t think Jay-Z should be No. 1 (or 2 or 3 or 4) but I don’t work for MTV. Admittedly, when I saw that MTV was doing this, I was highly skeptical. I thought that they would have too many emcees popular with the below 25 set like 50 Cent (and I will burn MTV down if 50 is one of the last two! . . .OK, maybe a strong letter or email). However, I think this is a respectable list even though it is highly New York slanted. MTV enlisted the help of their “Hip Hop brain trust” in compiling the list. They also have an “honorable mentions“list of emcees who would not be out of place on the top ten list. Seeing Kool G Rap on the honorable mentions list made be reminisce about how far The State Of . . . Hip Hop has come. Ahh . . . I can hear “The Symphony” now . . .
