Soul Sanctuary

New picture book, “Soul Sanctuary” by Jason Miccolo, takes a look at African-American churches in cities big and small.
oul Sanctuary is the first illustrated gift book to capture the spiritual dimension of the black church and the pride and dignity that prevail within the churchgoing family.
Soul Sanctuary captures the spirit of the black church through arresting images of congregants’ facial expressions and body language, their uniforms and dress, and the dignity of their worship. Baptisms, weddings, funerals, annual day celebrations, ecstatic soloists, choir directors, prophetic preachers, angelic liturgical dancers, and peaceful moments of prayer and praise are captured in Johnson’s intimate photographs.

The State Of . . . Our Churches is visually something to behold. I can’t count how many times I spent just staring at the pews, the pulpit, the windows, the arches, the paintings, of my childhood church when I should have been listening to the preacher. The style of black churches is an art form in and of itself.
