20 Warning Signs of a Down Low Brother

Ever since the publishing of the book The Down Low, homosexuality in the black community has risen from non-issue to front-and-center topic of conversation. In churches across America, black pastors are denouncing homosexuality, perhaps hippocritically. But one aspect of The Down Low that doesn’t get talked about much is its affect, in terms of new suspicions, on black heterosexual relationships. Well, that problem is solved by publishing of a new book, 20 Warning Signs of a Down Low Brothers.
In the past few years, I’ve had female friends tell me that they are scared to death that a guy they are dating is secretly gay. Conversely, I’ve had male friends tell me that they have been accused of being gay by black women with their “gay-dar” up. I must confess that since the publishing of the Down Low book, I’ve come to look at some of my (Justin) friends a litle differently, some of them I’ve known all my life. Sometimes, you look up and realize that one of your road dawgs is 35 and has never really had a girlfriend…or he disappears for weeks at a time…or moves from city to city…or he gets his nails buffed and polished.
I also have a female friend who just met a gentleman over the internet, and on their first date, she accused him of being gay. His response, “That’s not my thing.” (Ummm. If that’s all you have to say to that type of accusation, it probably is your thing, buddy. )
TheStateOf…Suspicion of the Down Low has changed black relationships. Brothers, once considered the most heterosexual people on the earth, are now under close scrutiny. Sisters, already struggling to find good men, are fed up and suspicious, and probably with good reason. What say you?
