I (Justin) once saw an interview with Mariah Carey and the interviewer asked her, “when did you know you could sing?” Mariah responded, “well, I was 7, and I was singing at school when a classmate told me, ‘when you sing, I see butterflies.‘”
Mariah’s comment always stuck with me. I could picture a little girl saying that to her friend, with little butterflies floating all around. For me, I swear I see butterflies when I hear Alicia Keys singing. It’s like my spine shivers a little with each note. Her voice is powerful, yet under control. Sweet but a little scratchy. I absolutely love “Unbreakable,” her “live” track. I listened to it about 20 times straight on a plane from L.A. to Atlanta.
