With the British airline bombing plot a hot topic on the news, people everywhere are debating whether Arabs and Muslims should be profiled in US airports.
“Yesterday on Fox News’ “Dayside,” conservative radio host Mike Gallagher proposed that airports institute a “Muslims only” line for airport travelers during a segment Tuesday on racial profiling. “It’s time to have a Muslims check-point line in America’s airports and have Muslims be scrutinized. You better believe it, it’s time,” Gallagher said, garnering tepid audience applause.”
Writer Kathleen Parker thinks Muslims should be profiled: “Thus, instead of deciding to closely scrutinize airline passengers who fit the description of a likely perpetrator — based not on bigotry, but on evidence, history and common sense — we frisk the elderly and confiscate toddlers’ sippy cups.”
Ruben Navarrette says profiling is un-American: “Now the embattled group is Muslim Americans. In the USA Today/Gallup poll, 39 percent of Americans said they felt at least some prejudice against Muslims. The same percentage favored requiring Muslims, including those who were U.S. citizens, to carry a special ID to help prevent future terrorist attacks. And 22 percent of respondents said they wouldn’t want Muslims as neighbors.”
TheStateOf . . . Profiling. As I’ve (Justin) said before, if they want to profile Muslims on airplanes, why not profile young black men in inner-cities? There is no moral or legal difference. One more big terror attack and this country is going to go absolutely nuts. It will not be pretty.
