A few days ago, Joe Biden found himself defending the “slavery cred” of Delaware. Biden did so in response to a question by an interviewer on how he expected to win Southern votes as a Northeast liberal. Biden inserted foot into mouth as follows: “You don’t know my state. My state was a slave state. My state was a border state… My state is anything but a Northeast liberal state.”
Granted, this is not as bad as Virginia Republican George Allen’s referring to his opponent’s campaign aid as “macaca,” but it shows something about Biden and candidates like him. They believe they have to cater to these Southern voters using Race. Why do they think the easiest way to bond with Southern voters is to celebrate common bigotry? What is a “better way” of getting the Southern white vote?
