Morehouse College President To Step Down

Venerable Morehouse College President Walter Massey announced that he will step down at the end of this academic year.

Massey, a 1958 Morehouse graduate, was named as the college’s ninth president in 1995. He is a physicist, former senior vice president and provost of the University of California System, and former director of the National Science Foundation.

During his tenure, Massey presided over the largest capital campaign in the Morehouse history, according to the college’s prepared statement.

The State Of . . . Dear Old Morehouse is in a much better place now than when Massey first took the reigns in the fall of 1996. Justin and I were among the first to graduate under Massey’s tenure-Massey’s Men, if you will. We had just gone through a number of years of financial scandal and Massey’s presence brought an immediate change in the morale of the campus. The campus has changed dramatically since his arrival and is joy to visit whenever I go down. Massey will be missed.

PS. Homecoming is the last weekend of October. I hope to see my brothers there!
