Kate Moss is pictured on the cover (above) in blackface. This apparently has caused an uproar in some parts of the blogosphere. Sadly, I think many may have missed the point. The main article inside the “Red” edition profiles African women from Kenya, Sudan, South Africa, Uganda, and Mali. The article tells the how they struggle with daily life. Moss’s appearance on the cover and the whole Red Campaign is all about raising awareness of the global fight against AIDS.
I (rich) first saw this cover shot in an airport a few weeks back and thought it was quite striking. I saw that it was the Red edition and knew that it was about the Global Fund. Like she’s done throughout her career, she was the looker to drawn you in so you can learn about a product. In this instance, the product is AIDS. I got no beef against Kate on this, even if she is in blackface. It’s not denigrating or humiliating. It’s for one of the best causes out there.
