Hanging Saddam Would Be Another Huge Mistake

Now comes the news that Saddam Hussein’s “conviction” will not be overturned by the “Iraqi appeals court,” thus paving the way for his hanging. American news outlets are debating whether the hanging should be public, or whether we should just show video of his dead body for he world to see. Hmmm.

Hanging or otherwise executing Saddam would be a HUGE mistake. Though Saddam was generally not liked in the Arab world, he’s still a Muslim, and therefore his execution at the hands of the Americans will be seen as a major slap in the face. No matter how bad Saddam was, there are a lot of people who are going to be quite angry if/when he hangs.

On another note, does anyone really believe that Saddam wrote a letter urging Iraqis to reconcile? Give me a break. For two years, the man has been vocally supportive of the insurgency, and now he’s supposed to be against it? Yeah right. Straight up paid-for government propaganda. That sounds about as fake as the oh-so-eloquent “letter” written by that Russian spy on his deathbed.
