“A grave infection in the large intestine, at least three failed operations and various complications have left Fidel Castro, laid up with a very grave prognosis,” the paper stated.
Citing sources at the Gregorio Marañón Hospital in Madrid, one of whose doctors flew to Havana to examine Castro last month, El Pais alleged that the 80-year-old’s problems stemmed from diverticulitis, a condition that causes inflammation in the digestive tract. Surgeons removed part of his large intestine but a rupture caused peritonitis - a potentially critical inflammation.
The State Of . . .Cuba will live on after Fidel. Although authorities in Florida are preparing for a large influx of Cubans if Fidel dies, I don’t think it will happen. Fidel’s brother Raul knows he cannot maintain the state of things after his brother dies. He will lessen the tight grip on the country and Cuba will open its doors to American businesses once again. It may become another touristy Caribbean isle. However it will be one with a literacy rate of over 90%, universal health care, and a rich music, art, and dance culture.
