Shawn Edwards, a film critic in Kansas City, compiled a list of the best 100 black films. Number one is above. I got no problem with that. By and large I have no problem with the movies on the list. However, I do have problems with the placement of a few. For instance:
- “Bamboozled” is 13, “Friday” is 18, and “Baby Boy” is 19. All are ahead of “A Raisin in the Sun” at 20, “Eve’s Bayou” at 28 (perhaps the most underrated black movie in the last 10 years), and “When We were Kings” at 37. “Blade” is at 47 while “Sankofa” is at 49. I could go on. That is the trouble with lists: you can never please everybody.
The State Of . . . “black cinema” has thrived in recent years and has gotten the critical attention it has long deserved. What’s your pick for the best Black Film?
