Obama’s Church Is Criticized . . . By Conservatives

Apparently, some conservatives have taken issue with the church Obama attends, Trinity United Church of Christ. The church, like so many African-American churches, have goals that are centered around African-American life. These conservatives have taken issue with the church’s “Black Value System.” This System calls for its members to be “soldiers for black freedom” and a “disavowal of the pursuit of middleclassness.”

The last part gave some cause. At one time, even Obama took issue with it. In his published memoirs, Obama said even he was stopped by Trinity’s tenet to disavow “middleclassness” when he first read it two decades ago in a church pamphlet. The brochure implored upwardly mobile church members not to distance themselves from less fortunate Trinity worshipers.

“As I read it, at least, it was a very simple argument taken directly from Scripture: `To whom much is given much is required,’” Obama said in the interview.

The State Of . . . Obama’s run for the White House. Welcome to the big leagues, Obama. He hasn’t even officially declared his run (that happens later this week) and the right wing soldiers are already preparing for war. The first criticisms of Obama thus far have dealt with his race and religion. A few weeks ago, there were erroneous reports that he attended a militant Muslim school in Indonesia. The reports turned out to be false. There was the row last week over him being called “articulate.” And now he is being criticized for doing what so many African-Americans do–practicing their faith. What other things that are germane to African-American life will his critics dredge up as a liability? These critics will make it seem as if being Pro-African-American means being anti-white.
