The Warrior Method

“The Warrior Method” is a program designed by Raymond Winbush to help parents and teachers transform young black boys into strong, self-reliant men. It is now taught at an institute funded in part by a grant from actors Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith.

Tavis Smiley has an interview with Winbush at the link above. Winbush also started The Warrior Institute in Baltimore on the campus of Morgan State University with a grant from Will and Jada.

The State Of . . . Warrior method
seems all well and good. There are very likely a great number of young men who could benefit from the method.

But I (rich) have issues with the interview he gave to Tavis. They talk about “brainwashed” Africans who helped sell other Africans to Europeans during the slave trade. Personally, I thought a great number of those Africans were sold into slavery because they were on the losing side of tribal wars and the like. I’m sure that is partially the case. But I digress. His modern day examples of “brainwashed” individuals are Condi Rice and Colin Powell. Although I do not agree with the politics of these two, I take issue with his characterization of their beliefs as being the result of brainwashing. Rice and Powell have logical reasons for their political beliefs. Reasonable people can disagree with their stances. To say that they are brainwashed is lazy because it does not take on the effort of attacking their beliefs on the merits. And as many of you know who read this blog, there are a million and one logical and reasonable reasons to disagree with these two.

I wish the students of the Warrior Institute luck. I just hope their critical reasoning skills are better than just name calling.
