Why Pledge But Not Pray?

“I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands: one Nation under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all.”

I (J) was watching a show about kids attending their first day of school, and I was struck by how the children were compelled to say the pledge of allegiance to begin the school day. It got me to thinking: if the government can compel kids to say the pledge, why can’t the government permit kids to pray, even voluntarily?? Why can a child be forced to pledge allegiance to the government and not to his or her God? Why is it OK to force my son to swear allegiance to a government that rapes and pillages around the world, but not OK for the teacher to lead him in a silent prayer to start the day?

A few years ago, I was four-square against prayer in school, but now I’d be for it. Some prayer in school might do this country some good.
