Quote of the Day: True or False?

“Punishment doesn’t drive behavior. . . Copying and modeling and the social expectations of your peers is what drives your behavior.”

Gary Slutkin founder of CeaseFire in Chicago.  A group that employs ex-cons to persuade the friends and relatives of victims of violence to not engage in retaliatory violence.

  1. True. Unfortunate, but true.

Our criminal justice system needs reformation (to say the least) with this sentiment in mind.

  2. Before we reform the criminal justice system, we need to reform the family.

  3. Reform the family, and no reform of the criminal justice system will be necessary. Much of what we see in there is the residue of weak families.

  4. For some, punishment does do it, but for too many it doesn’t.

If I were in charge of the prison system it would be damn near close to college. I’d have ‘em in there reading, watching PBS and the wildlife channel and learning trades.

You’d come out much more educated that when you went in.
