Obama Reads TSO!!!

On Father’s day, Obama went to the other mega church on the southside of Chicago, Apostolic Church of God to deliver a speech denouncing absent father’s.  Obama told the crowd what we already know on the TSO–that fathers should be active in the child’s life and being a strong pillar for the family. Obama, whose dad left when he was a tyke vowed long ago to be a good father to his girls.

Another part of his message concerned those times when we congratulate ourselves for dong things we are supposed to do anyway.  A portion of his message. . .

You know, sometimes I’ll go to an eighth-grade graduation and there’s all that pomp and circumstance and gowns and flowers. And I think to myself, it’s just eighth grade. To really compete, they need to graduate high school, and then they need to graduate college, and they probably need a graduate degree too. An eighth-grade education doesn’t cut it today. Let’s give them a handshake and tell them to get their butts back in the library!

The State Of . . . The State Of. Seeping into the American psyche one mind at a time!

  1. I think that Obama has talked about parental involvement before so I am not sure why this is news.

  2. Because he did it at a DIFFERENT church. That’s why it was interesting here in the Chi since he left Trinity. Apostolic is a different kind of church than Trinity. I’ve gone to Apostolic before and it didn’t want to join. It’ll be interesting to see if the Obamas do join it, though.

  3. Funny but as i read about BHO’s comments, i thought about TSO…..LOL

  4. Hm, TSO takes credit again - lovely. I do want to see the speech in its entirety. Youtube most likely huh?

We are going to continue to celebrate 8th grade in my area. It’s called motivation.

  5. good pt Truth.

Rod, it was Father’s day, so that’s the reason it seems…gives it a twist.

I visited home recently and it was great seeing young men with their young ones. Although it should be a given, the reality of it is different. So I’m thankful and appreciate it. I’ve made the same vow.

  6. I’m glad Obama talks about this issue. I’m glad he’s not one of these “blame racism” people. This is the #1 issue in the black community.

  7. i agree; that eight grade graduation is the dumbest shyt I have ever heard of.

But then again, it’s the only one a lot of kids will have; my hometown graduates 50% of its students.

Come to think of it, sometimes black people make me sick with their triflin’ ass attitude towards educating their kids.

  8. One of my homies/classmates from medical school just gave the commencement speech at one of the University of Chicago Charter Schools. The Daniel Hale Williams Preparatory School of Medicine. One of 3 elementary schools housed in the former Dusable High school facility here on the southside. The kids do need the motivation. They need to see us. Truth is on point with that motivation.

It is hard to find the time to be a mentor. Its harder to find the right thing to say when your mentees fall short. I guess not as hard as being a parent. Or as hard as a future where people don’t have the benefit of people who care enough to try. Our talk was mutually beneficial and inspiring.
