“At 37, I’ve had dreadlocks for nearly half my lifetime. Why I got them is not really important; what is important is that I like them. I cringe when people say “your hair must be so easy; you never have to do anything to it.” Because anyone with a natural hairstyle knows, it takes work to keep chemical-free hair neat. And if you’re a person who likes to play with her locks—a sweet Audrey Hepburn bun one day, the next day, curly locks (achieved via rod set and three hours underneath the dryer)—then it is an effort. Not to mention, I like to color my hair. I’ve settled into a caramel brown with light highlights, but my locks have been everything from dirty blonde to fire engine red. And my husband, bless his Pucci-hating heart, loves my hair.

Here come the “I’m blacker than you b/c I have dreds and natural hair” talk.
Not at all Truth. One of the most facinating gifts of being a Black woman is we have versatility with how we express ourselves via our crown. I, too, have locs..my hair has been natural for about 15yrs, but I have also rocked a relaxer, braids, weave(sew in and quick!), press and curl, etc….so, I admonish you to do you..whatever that is sista.
much love. for real.
So what does this all have to do with weaves?
So what does this have to do with weaves?
For the record, it takes time to keep even relaxed hair looking nice. Speaking of which…I better go pick up my perm kit tonight.
OT
Surprised there was no blog on that HPV shot and the latest findings
Truth, TOS did a blog about the HPV shot when it first came out.
Email J the link and maybe he will do a post about it.
I would be uncomfortable with a weave. I’d just feel like a fake. Plus, you see so many that dont look so hot. I just assume do the best I can with what I got.
I’m new to it and love the break—I think you feel fake if your real hair has a whole lot of issues; but if your natural hair is healthy and you are just looking for a change, my advice is spend the money to do it right so you are not looking crazy. Get good hair that looks natural, matches your hair color, flows naturally; I think I got over it when I realized how celebrities that still have natural, not over-the-top, looks (like Gabriel Union, jada pinkett-smith, Sanaa Lathan, Nia Long, etc) wear them to take stress off of their own hair and to always look good—not fake; I can achieve the same look with my natural hair as the weave, but it won’t last past the weekend or past a good sweaty workout; I say all this to say—it is not always about being fake or trying to be fabulous—sometimes you just want to maintain…
Yani,
thank you so much for having me last weekend! the food was delicioius and u were a gracious hostess. and, your hair is georgeous by the way….
I used to feel like Robyn, that weaves were “fake.” Since then, I’ve kind of come around. If it’s under control, cool. But I know people who have weaves that look like wigs.
Yani, that was a weave in your head??
Big Brother—see, you make my point! A girl would otherwise never tell (like telling her age)—but since the topic came up on TSO, I gave my two cents…shhhhhh!!!
I don’t have the cash flow for a sew-in or a fusion, so I’ve had to go the “quick weave” route. My own natural hair is very fine and thinning. I’m one of those people who think a larger woman needs more hair.
I do agree that natural-looking is best — although I am on the lighter spectrum of AfAm coloring, I don’t think a Janice Combs faux platinum blonde really looks right for me.
My sister/stylist dyes my natural hair to a dark brown/off black base that matches the falls.
I have dreads but I am a total weave advocate. Just like Yani said, weave is a good way to give your hair a rest but still have the styles that we like.
I use weave as one of my main selling points when trying to convince my friends to ‘go natural’. “Girl, that chemical is NO GOOD FOR YOU! You don’t have to rock a fro, or get dreads like me. Just get a weave, girl. A good one.” This ‘pitch’ has actually worked like 3 times.
LOL @ Cookie
Cookie is THE most adorable dread locked princess!
I don’t do weave… too much damn work. But I will rock braids until the casket drops!
Awwww (i’m blushing) thanks jasai!
Unbeweaveable! Imma roll with my girl RJEsq on this one. I’m cool on the weaves. I’m the type of brotha that just might like to reach up and grab and hand full or pull a pony tail or even just run my hands through. If there’s one thing I know about a woman with a weave…DON”T TOUCH IT!
Say I’m lying.
LOL!
keep THAT real Wayne!
LOL Wayne.
Keepin it all the way real though, when Black hair is freshly done, its not to be touched whether its grown or sewn.
