“The Black National Anthem”

What do you think of “Lift Every Voice And Sing?”  Do you know the words - even to verse two?  Do you sing it at your corny corporate diversity outings?

  1. No, I don’t know all the words. It is greatly appreciated when the words to the 2nd and 3rd verse are printed in the program.

I attended the “Black” graduation at University of Illinois a few years back where they sand the song, of course. The soloist, however, forgot the words midway into the second verse and the choir backing him up tried to sing over him. Ahhh, those majority institutions of higher learning are sooo funny.

  2. I like the song. It’s beautiful to me. Do I know all the words, no. But most students from HBCU’s that were involved in the choir/chorus do. At least a Prairie View A&M University I know they do.

  3. So we shouting out where we went to schoool?

    hm… I went to a black school

    School of Hard KNOCKS

  6. Jasai, that is hilarious.

I know the words to verses 1 and 2, but not 3.

    Beautiful lyrics.

  7. Yep. Know it. Love it.

  8. Jasai,

    That was great!!

  9. Know the first verse, half assed know the second. i sing it at black events. To sing LEVAS at, say, a Yankees game is ludicrous. it is not the American natinoal anthem.

The sista was WAY out of line.

  10. Dont know it and while a nice idea, I dont feel anymore about the song than I do about the mainstream national anthem.

  11. I know the 1st and 2nd verse…I went to Dunbar 6th Grade Center and any Black kids HAD to learn that song. Then having attended CAU and participating in UNCF stuff it was just expected to know it. It’s a great song and I am glad I was forced to learn it at such a young age.

  12. I’ve been singing it since I was in elementary school and it’s also heard at my family reunions. Morehouse Glee Club sings it as well.
