Do you care? Are you gonna watch?
The opening ceremonies took place in Beijing earlier today. This has been billed as China’s big show and their effort to shine on the international stage. They don’t want to hear any complaints about human rights or smog. Just shut up and enjoy it. But as the American viewer of the Olympics, are YOU going to watch any of it? Not the politics stuff, but the sport?
Although the athletes are sleeker and faster than ever, that hasn’t helped the downward trend in viewing among Americans. There was a time when there was no doubt that I (rich) would tune in to watch Track & Field, some Boxing, and, if Ms. Dawes was there, a little gymnastics. I used to watch Basketball when it was still amateur. Honestly, I didn’t even watch the Dream Team. But now, there doesn’t seem to be any anticipation for the games for me. Not even the manufactured anticipation of whether Phelps will win 7 instead of 6 gold medals peaks my interest. (Although there is a brotha on the team that is expected to do well.) Nothing much makes me want to watch the games, although I will read the results.
With all that being said, the things I’m interested in seeing in these games are:
1) How the U.S. Soccer teams will do. For the men, this may be a nice pre-preview of the World Cup 2010. For the women, I’m wondering if they will rebound after their loss to Norway a few days ago.
2) Who will be the fastest man alive at 100 meters? No explanation needed.
3) That’s it. As for basketball, how can you really be excited about it when you know who’s going to win.
So I ask again: Do you care about these Olympics? What are you gonna watch?

Those terror threats concern me more than anything.
I may watch some track and field… I’ll most likely tune in now and again randomly. But I’m with you, nothing is grabbing me.
Will be watching ALL of it.
Keep an eye on my boy Terrence Tremmell. Watch him race Liu Xiang of China in the 110 Hurdles….He’s from the neighborhood I grew up in and he works out at the same gym I use.
Basketball squad is the best since the dream team…Melo, Kobe, CP, Lebron, D-Wade…….Dang……(wish Iverson was on the team instead of Kidd)
For some reason, I’m just not feeling it. I’ll catch some “this is a sport? really?” events and other lesser known sports out of sheer curiosity.
Apparently, that X-games dirt biking is in the Olympics now. Huh? When are they going to include NASCAR?
Honeslty, I don’t know where all the party poopin’ comes from with regards to the Olympics. Not just this year, but even the last few…alot of people are like “whatever”. I don’t get it.
The Olympics is always tops on my list. It only happens every four years so I’m excited. Besides that, it’s the dog days of summer for me with regards to sports. It will keep me satisfied till football rolls around.
When I think of the summer Olympics, I think of Track n Field, Swimming, and Gymnastics. Although the basketball team SHOULD win, it will be interesting to see how they do, since the last few squads played like shet. That alone will peak my interest.
I will watch it if it is on and I’m flipping through channels, but am not drawn so much that I will plan to catch any particular event.
it’s so anti-climatic this year. Don’t know why. I will probably watch my usual–track, gymnastics and swimming, b-ball towards the end.
I’ve always liked the Olympics. I will be watching. Especially track and gymnastics, sometimes diving. I do want to see how Dana Torres, the 41 year old swimmer, is going to do.
I’ll be watching as much of the Olympics as is huymanly possible. Comes along once every four years, get the see the best athletes. GTFOOH.
I went to Montreal. Man, ain’t nothing like being in a stadium with people from all over the world, speaking differnt languages and cheering the athletes running around the track.
And I’m not even a sports fan. At all.
Bummer with this though:
LeBron James, Kobe Bryant or any other member of Team USA will not use the Beijing Olympics as a platform to raise awareness to the crisis in Darfur. Back in May, James told ESPN that he would encourage his teammates to make a formal statement about how China has helped fund a genocide by supporting the Sudanese government as its primary trade partner for oil.
It seems like the Olympics meant more back when I was a kid. I don’t know what changed…. Was it the doping?
I will be watching the boxing, track and gymnastics.
The Prince will be watching boxing, track, basketball and gymnatics.
I love basketball and boxing. I only watch track and gymnastics during this time. But I am always awed at the quality of those athletes. They are amazing.
